Chapter Seven

For the next five days Geneva did everything she possibly could to stay busy and away from home. On Monday morning she woke up to find that she had started her cycle, so she had one less thing to occupy her mind. She cried that morning on her way to work, sadness mixed with relief. She hadn’t been ready to have a child on her own and she knew it, but part of her had wanted that connection to Kyle, that special little person that she could love and know was a part of him. It saddened her that when she left to get married—there was no question in her mind that she could find a man who would suit, and off she would go with him—there would be absolutely no connection between her and Kyle except Highland Hills. A business connection. And of course that little matter of being cousins. She would see him at family affairs, she with her husband and children, and he, eventually, with his family. The thought bothered her tremendously.

Wednesday morning Wendy told her that she and Willie had talked to each other and to their banker about financing, and she would love to buy the partnership in the business. Geneva was thrilled and they set about making plans. She had put off looking for a house, and now she needed to get serious about finding a place to turn into an inn as well. It would be hard turning over the daily control in Heart’s Desire to someone else, but at least Wendy was someone she trusted and respected.

Len and Harvey left on Friday. She had continued taking their lunch to them at the house during the week and they had eaten their dinners together at the restaurant. On Thursday night, the men had treated Geneva to dinner at the hotel and asked Wendy, Willie and Melissa to join them for drinks after work.

Kyle hadn’t call her all week, although she knew he was supposed to be in New York on Wednesday, and therefore even in the same time zone. Harvey had said their report would be ready by Monday and that Kyle had requested that a copy be sent to Geneva.

So, she had gotten through to him that she wanted to be part of the decision making process. Or at least to be able to pretend that she was.

Friday night, the beginning of the Labor Day weekend, was very busy. Geneva didn’t get home until almost midnight and she feared the rest of the weekend would be just as busy. She parked her car and dragged herself into the cottage, dropping her purse on the kitchen table, unsnapping, unbuttoning and removing clothing and shoes as she went through the house. She saw the message light flashing on the answering machine, but she was too tired to deal with it. She took a shower and climbed into her pajamas.

Guilt niggled at her for not listening to her messages. What if something was wrong?
